Structural Heart Program

The Structural Heart Program at the Providence Heart Institute offers the most advanced care to patients in Montana and the Rocky Mountain region. The program provides patients who have structural heart disease with individualized, comprehensive evaluation and treatment recommendations from an expert team.

Coordinated, multidisciplinary expertise

Our team includes cardiothoracic surgeons, interventional cardiologists, echocardiologists, cardiac imaging specialists, electrophysiologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and nursing staff. The shared expertise and collegial communication among all the members of the structural heart team ensures patients optimal treatment plans based on established guidelines and standards of care.

Care focused on you

Special attention is given to the patient in navigating through the health care system, streamlining testing and scheduling office visits. The Structural Heart Program is a part of the Duran Center for Heart Valve Disease, a specialized clinic focused on a subset of cardiac patients with valvular heart disease.

The Structural Heart Program is a part of the Duran Center for Heart Valve Disease, a specialized clinic focused on a subset of cardiac patients with valvular heart disease.

Among the interventional procedures performed at The Duran Center for Heart Valve Disease are:

  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for aortic stenosis
  • Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) for bioprosthetic mitral stenosis
  • Transcatheter mitral valve repair using the MitraClip
  • Left atrial appendage occlusion (Watchman) to reduce embolic stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation
  • Closure of atrial and ventricular septal defects using the Amplatzer device
  • Alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
  • Traditional surgery for heart valve repair or replacement, MAZE procedures for atrial fibrillation, resection of sub-aortic stenosis, repair of atrial and ventricular septal defects and repair of aortic and ventricular aneurysms

Structural heart disease refers to abnormalities of the heart valves or chambers of the heart. These can be ‘congenital,’ which are present from birth, or ‘acquired’ that develop with age and the gradual wear and tear on the heart. Other disease processes such as an infection and clotting disorders can also cause structural heart disease.

Common valvular heart disorders include stenosis (narrowing) or regurgitation (leaking) of the four heart valves. Each of the heart valves–the aortic, mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonic valves–can be affected as well as any of the four chambers of the heart or the tissues which separate the heart chambers.
