The postpartum period typically lasts five to seven weeks after your baby is born. During this time it is important for you to focus on taking care of yourself and your baby.
Many mothers become sleep deprived while feeding and nurturing the baby at night. To stay alert and rested, try to nap throughout the day while your baby sleeps.
Moms experience many emotions after childbirth including love, excitement and joy, while also having anxiety, fear and in some cases depression.
Postpartum depression usually includes mood swings and crying that quickly fades. Sometimes postpartum psychosis—an extreme form of postpartum depression—develops after childbirth.
If you experience postpartum depression it is important to know that you are not alone. Your provider can provide fast acting treatment to help you manage your postpartum symptoms and enjoy your baby.
A few days after arriving home, call your provider to schedule a postpartum medical exam for two to six weeks after your baby’s birth. You are always welcome to call your provider or our nursing staff to ask questions.
