During gastric sleeve surgery, the surgeon removes about 85 percent of the stomach so it takes the shape of a tube or sleeve. The new, tube-shaped stomach is closed with staples.
Weight-loss results from gastric sleeve are equal or greater to LAP-BAND® surgery, with roughly the same risk of complication. Many find the gastric sleeve procedure more desirable because, unlike LAP-BAND®, no foreign object is placed in the body. The Gastric Sleeve has a greater leak risk than the LAP-BAND or gastric bypass, but other risks are lower.
