Birth and Family Classes  

Providence St. Patrick Hospital offers education classes to ease your way into this new stage of your life. Our classes are taught by certified childbirth educators and are designed to prepare you and give you peace of mind during these next exciting phases of your life, from pre-delivery to life with a baby at home. Space is limited. Registration is required.

Prenatal Birth Classes

Childbirth Preparation: Labor, Birth and Postpartum Healing (six-week series)

This six-week class series will help prepare you and your partner for what to expect in labor and birth. This class explores the physical, mental and emotional process of labor and will enrich your understanding of what your body and baby do throughout the birthing process. You’ll receive an overview of what to expect in a delivery at Providence St. Patrick Hospital Family Maternity Center and a tour of our brand new facility.

  • Week 1: Introduction
    Introductions, class overview, and exploration of self-care practices that support your remaining weeks of pregnancy and readiness for labor and birth.
  • Week 2: Stress Reduction
    Understanding the impact of stress on your pregnancy, baby, and birth experience. You’ll deepen your understanding of your own personal coping styles and how to tap into your unique strengths in labor.
  • Week 3: Preparing for Birth
    Getting ready for labor, birth and baby and recognizing the signs of labor. Understanding contractions; what they are, what they feel like, how to time them, and how to work with them. What to expect in admission and care at Providence St. Patrick Hospital Family Maternity Center and bringing focus to your personal goals and preferences for birth.
  • Week 4: Basics of Birth
    Understanding what’s happening to your body and baby in each stage of labor and birth and the practices and positions that support healthy birth progression. Exploring your options for medical pain relief and comfort, as well as your options for natural childbirth.
  • Week 5: Postpartum Recovery
    What to expect in the physical, mental and emotional process of healing after the birth of your baby. We’ll include tips for a healthy recovery and transition to parenthood.
  • Week 6: Birth Relaxation
    Exploration and practice of all the major styles of labor breathing and relaxation, and a rich understanding of how to use these practices in any and all types of birth.

Partners are welcomed and encouraged to attend to learn how to actively support throughout labor and birth. We believe that knowing what to expect in labor, how to prepare, understanding your choices and building confidence in your ability to birth your baby will help make labor and birth a healthy, empowering, and joyful experience.

This is a six-week class series meeting Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dress comfortably. Partners are encouraged but not required to attend. Registration for this class is required and space is limited.

Our one-day childbirth preparedness class is an alternative to the six-week series for those who need or prefer to receive their birth education and support in a shorter time frame. This class explores the physical, mental and emotional process of labor and will enrich your understanding of what your body and baby do throughout the birthing process. You’ll receive an overview of what to expect in a delivery at Providence St. Patrick Hospital Family Maternity Center and a tour of our brand new facility.

We’ll explore:

  • What to expect in admission and care at our new Family Maternity Center.

Refresher Childbirth Class

Bring focus to THIS baby, and THIS birth. In this interactive childbirth refresher class, experienced parents are encouraged to share the story of their prior birth(s), give voice to hopes for the next birth experience and explore ways in which this birth may be different. We will revisit the signs and stages of labor; discuss how to prepare siblings for the birth of a new baby; strategies for postpartum healing and newborn care while still caring for an older child or children; and help you discover and remember your unique strengths and coping skills for a positive birth and postpartum experience.

Prenatal Infant Care Classes

Breast-feeding: Getting Off to a Good Start

This prenatal breast-feeding class is designed for mothers who plan to breast-feed and for those that have not yet made the decision, but want to learn more. Topics covered include the benefits of breast-feeding, a baby’s nine instinctive stages the first hour after birth, benefits of holding baby skin-to-skin and solutions to commonly encountered breast-feeding difficulties. A support person is encouraged to attend, but not required.

Newborn Care Basics

In this one-evening class, we’ll explore basic care for your newborn and the standard procedures of baby care at Providence St. Patrick Hospital’s Family Maternity Center. From the first moments after birth to the weeks that follow at home, you’ll discover ways to ease your baby’s transition into the world, enhance your understanding of how to read your newborn’s signs and cues, and develop confidence in your ability to meet your infant’s basic needs. Both parents-to-be are encouraged to attend this class together, though single participation is most welcomed. This is the space for all of your questions about what happens after baby comes.

Keeping Baby Safe

With a new baby in the house, there is much to consider! The first hour of class is a panel presentation with information, tips and Q&A with community experts on how to keep your baby safe in the water, safe in the car and safe at home. In the second hour, our nursery educator will will offer hands-on infant resuscitation instruction.

Prenatal Family Classes

Becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister

The Sibling Preparation Class is a fun and interactive experience that will help your child prepare for the role of big brother or sister, explore what life with a new baby is like, and mix and mingle with other children who are also waiting for a little brother or sister to arrive.

Details and Registration:

In order to cater to the learning level of your child, we offer two class options:

  • Children ages 2-4
  • Children ages 5-7

If you have children of multiple ages and would like them to attend together, please choose the age group you prefer. If you unsure which age group to choose, or if you prefer the other class date, please call (406) 329-5348. We will do our best to accommodate your needs.

Parents are required to attend the class with their child or children. Registration for this class is required and space is limited.

Cost: $10 for one child; $15 for multiple children (from the same family).

Grandparents Class

Babies haven’t changed, but what we know about them has! This class brings together seasoned, first time, and expecting grandparents to celebrate the arrival or coming of a grandbaby. Together we will explore the ways in which infant care has changed over the years and why; how to best support your children through pregnancy, birth and early parenthood; and the important and unique role of a grandparent.

Details and Registration:

This two-hour evening class offers a relaxed and supportive space to learn, ask questions, voice concerns and share in the exciting experience of grandparenting. Registration for this class is required and space is limited.

Cost: $20 for individuals; $35 for grandparent couples.

New Baby Classes and Support Services

Infant Massage

Infant massage is a unique form of nurturing touch that has been shown to have physical and psychological benefits for infants and parents. In this class, you will learn techniques that will:

  • Contribute to your baby’s development
  • Deepen attachment
  • Help you understand and respond appropriately to your baby’s cues
  • Relax and soothe a fussy baby
  • Relieve gas and symptoms of colic
  • Help your baby sleep better

Because you attend this class with your infant, you receive individual help to address your baby’s special needs. The class is taught by a certified infant massage instructor.

Out of the Blue

A postpartum group for moms

One in five women experience some form of postpartum emotional challenges. This does not occur because of something a mother does or does not do.

If you are experiencing, or have experienced sadness, emptiness, irritability, feeling overwhelmed, excessive worry, withdrawal from family and friends, loss of interest, or disconnection with your baby, there are options for help. “Out of the Blue” is a Postpartum Group for moms designed to support you through this transition.

This group meets every Thursday, 11:30am-1:30pm. Women are welcome and encouraged to attend with their baby.

Missoula Baby-Bistro

Facilitated by experiences lactation consultants, we invite breastfeeding moms and families to attend and ask questions about the ins-and-outs of breastfeeding, while meeting other Missoula-area moms and babies. This free group is a collaboration of the Missoula Breastfeeding Coalition, Providence St. Patrick Hospital Family Maternity Center and Community Hospital.

Details and Registration:

This is a free, drop-in group; no registration required. Meets every Wednesday, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. the Zootown Brew Coffee Shop (downstairs meeting room).

One-on-One Lactation Consultation and Support

Our Missoula Family Maternity Center is dedicated to assist you with breast-feeding, even after you return home with your newborn. A lactation specialist is available to guide you through any breast-feeding challenge that may arise as your baby grows. This includes help with healing nipples, infant weight gain, going back to work and assessing milk supply. Whatever the reason, we are here to support you through your breast-feeding journey.

Back To Work/School Breastfeeding Class

In this one-evening class we will learn the basics of effective pumping and milk storage, bottle feeding, keeping up milk supply, and confidently transitioning from home back to work/school. This class is intended for breastfeeding mothers preparing to return to work/school and want to continue breastfeeding.

This is a one-evening class meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Partners/caregivers welcome. Cost is $35; registration for this class is required and space is limited.
