Before Offering Another Treatment Identify New Goals
A stage performance that provides insight into the benefits and burdens of treatment at the end of life. This production speaks to everyone at a deeply personal level about a subject that has, or will, impact each and every one of us. The performance has the ability to reach even those most resistant to promoting palliative care and hospice to patients, family and loved ones, or those who think death will never touch them personally.
B.O.A.T.I.N.G.© is a powerful, one-act play that provides insight into the benefits and burdens of treatment at the end of life. Originally designed as an educational tool for healthcare providers, B.O.A.T.I.N.G. speaks to everyone at a deeply personal level about a subject that has or will impact each of us.
Written by Jill Bixby APRN, MA, MS, CHPN, Oakland, Maine, B.O.A.T.I.N.G. was inspired by a vivid dream of the author. She had been wrestling with a way to educate physicians and other medical professionals on the importance of recognizing the point at which aggressive curative treatment might no longer be the patient’s goal. When is the right time to refer to palliative care and hospice?
Bringing B.O.A.T.I.N.G. to life has become a collaborative effort between Jill Bixby and Carol Schoneberg, an end-of-life educator at Hospice of Southern Maine - Maine’s first freestanding, not-for-profit hospice.
Part of the unique beauty of B.O.A.T.I.N.G. is that it is designed to be easily accessible to small groups of individuals who recognize its power and wish to perform the play in their own communities. With a performance time of 30 minutes, it lends itself very well to an educational environment, allowing additional time to respond to the feelings and questions it is certain to raise. B.O.A.T.I.N.G. requires no memorizations of lines or seasoned actors, only the strong belief in palliative care and hospice to improve the way Americans are dying.
