International Heart Institute Saves Lives

Flying is one of my biggest passions.  Imagine losing the ability to pursue your passions.

If I had not had my heart’s mitral valve repaired, I would have lost my license to fly.

Attending a series of family events in Virginia that included my son’s graduation from graduate school and the birth of his second child, I became ill with a fever of 103 that lasted all night.  Once I returned home to Connecticut, I went to see my doctor.  Within 24 hours, I found out that I had a serious, ultimately life threatening, problem with the function of my heart’s mitral valve.

As fate would have it, my Yale cardiac surgeon had attended a Rocky Mountain Valve Symposium in Missoula, Montana and suggested I have my heart surgery there.  I had shared with my doctor that my wife and I were moving to Missoula to be near our daughter and her children.  My timing could not have been better as the 2004 Rocky Mountain Valve Symposium was gearing up, and I became Thursday’s surgical patient for the symposium.

Giving back is another of my passions. I now volunteer at St. Patrick Hospital and am current president of the Missoula Mended Hearts Chapter.  Mended Hearts, I believe, is part of the excellent cardiac recovery program that makes this hospital and the International Heart Institute so special.

The International Heart Institute of Montana brings together a recognized team of cardiologists, heart surgeons, nurses and researchers to perform advanced cardiac procedures and to search for new and improved ways to treat heart disease.

St. Patrick Hospital’s International Heart Institute continues to rank as one of the 50 top heart hospitals in the nation on Truven Health’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals list.

As we approach the holiday season and the end of 2013, please pursue your passions and consider a gift that will make a difference.  100% of your gift to the Foundation will go to the good works of St. Patrick Hospital, so they can provide exceptional care right here in Montana.

You can designate your gift to support the International Heart Institute or any of the excellent programs at St. Patrick Hospital. You can make a donation now by clicking on the button below to make a private and secure donation.  So, join me and my wife Cyndy in making a gift to St. Pat’s this holiday season. Thank you for your generosity!

Sincerely,

Raymond Aten
